PTS Skilled Operative

As a skilled PTS Operative, you are responsible for undertaking work related activities on behalf of our customers and supply chain partners on behalf of the business. You are responsible for working in accordance with the company policies, procedures are adhered to ensure the reputation of the company is upheld and enhanced.

Key Responsibilities

The PTS Skilled Operative is accountable for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Taking care of your own health and safety, and others who might be affected by your actions.
  • Uphold the policies and procedures of the business and ensure all staff understand their responsibilities when working on site.
  • Compliance with all relevant Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and our clients company standards, and third-party local instructions.
  • Ensure all site safety documentation (works package plans method statements, risk assessments, task briefings and toolbox talks) are understood by yourself and signed accordingly.
  • Support the Site Foreman or Works Managers complete weekly time sheets and expense returns are populated with correct information, receipts or invoices and are returned to head office for processing by the finance department.
  • Ensure you are fit and well and ready for work daily. Any staff suspected of consuming illegal substances or alcohol should be stood down and reported to your line manager immediately to undertake for cause or random D&A testing.
  • Provide the site Foreman/Supervisor or sentinel and training coordinator with a minimum of 2-weeks’ notice if any annual leave days are required.
  • Advise your line manager as soon as reasonably practicable if you require a day off to attend personal meetings or appointments; any staff who do not roster for work as planned may face disciplinary proceedings.
  • Ensure you are using all mandated PPE with KGJ Price Railway Contractors Logos displayed. Use of other company or organisations PPE is not acceptable.
  • Ensure when undertaking daily activities you comply with the site-specific risk assessment and method statement and are using task specific PPE (impact resistant goggles, spats, dust masks, ear defenders) when undertaking activities such as (cutting/burning rail, laying ballast, tamping, packing, or drilling rail).
  • Ensure any PPE not fit for purpose is returned to head office to be inspected, quarantined, and replaced accordingly by the sentinel and training coordinator.
  • When required support the business Works Managers to advise how projects should be undertaken, and what items of plant and equipment would be required to complete the works safely without compromise.
  • You are responsible for supporting the site Foreman or works managers complete daily site diaries and report any commercial, financial, design, quality, or safety issues immediately.
  • You are responsible for supporting the site Foreman complete weekly site safety inspections and report any safety issues immediately.
  • Support the site Foreman on site to ensure all works are being undertaken as planned and are completed to a safe and satisfactory condition and to a high standard as expected by the client.
  • Ensure all company vehicles, plant, equipment, and tools are maintained, inspected and are in good working order.
  • Ensure all equipment you are responsible for (track gauges, laser levels, chains, lifting equipment and CAT and Gennies) are inspected and calibrated as per the companies’ requirements. All equipment must be registered on the company’s compliance tracker managed by the business lead engineer.
  • You are responsible for inspecting all internally owned plant or hired plant and equipment when being delivered to site to ensure it is fit for purpose and free from any damage. When off hiring any plant or equipment ensure sufficient photographs are taken to ensure our business is not charged for damage for which we are not responsible.
  • Ensure all damages to vehicles, plant or equipment are reported immediately to your line manager or the business logistics coordinator.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness when using company vehicles, hired, plant, equipment, and welfare units.
  • When driving company vehicles, act in accordance with highway standards, regulations, and mandated speed limits to ensure the business reputation is not affected.
  • When off hiring plant or equipment, ensure the machines are full of fuel to ensure the business is not charged forecourt prices by the plant hire company.
  • Ensure all materials (rail, sleepers, S&C units, ballast) are inspected when delivered to site to ensure all material are fit for purpose, checked, and signed for by an individual in your team and the delivery driver.
  • Where appropriate, act as mentor for junior operational staff
  • Uphold the core company values, inspire, and encourage the same throughout the team.
  • Ensure that all mandatory reporting of Close Calls, accidents and incidents are conducted as per company reporting procedures.
  • Ensure your own training competencies are maintained, and you attend induction or training courses when required.
  • Any other duties appropriate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and/or training to fulfil.
